Researchers think that Alzheimer’s may be present in a person as early as 10 years before any symptoms show. It is most commonly found in people ages 65 and older.

What triggers Alzheimer's?

Scientists believe that Alzheimer’s disease is caused by a build-up of two proteins in your brain – amyloid protein and tau protein. Unfortunately, the outlook is not good for people living with Alzheimer’s. While the exact prognosis and outcome will vary, Alzheimer’s patients typically pass away 4 to 8 years after their initial diagnosis. However, some people can live up to 20 years following their diagnosis.

Is Alzheimer’s more common in one gender than another?

People of every gender can suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. However, nearly two-thirds of people who live with the disease are women.

Why does Alzheimer's affect women more?

Several factors explain why women are more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s, but most scientists think it’s due to women living longer than men on average. After all, old age is a primary factor in developing Alzheimer’s. But some scientists think there may be more to the story than women’s longer average lifespans. There are currently studies being done to determine whether women are more prone to the disease because of genetics or life factors.

What deficiency causes Alzheimer's disease?

The ultimate causes of Alzheimer’s are still quite murky, and it would not be accurate to say that any vitamin or nutrient deficiency causes the disease. Again, we don’t know enough about the causes of Alzheimer’s to say with confidence that a particular lifestyle or habit inevitably leads to the disease. However, scientists are currently exploring whether cardiac and vascular diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol as well as metabolic conditions like diabetes and obesity may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. A 2015 study also found that smoking can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. So, if you’re hoping to make lifestyle changes to reduce your Alzheimer’s risk, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking would all be good places to start.

When it comes to diabetes management, we understand that no two cases are alike. We always treat the whole patient, not just a single condition. For instance, for residents with severe complications or advanced dementia, we may focus more on comfort and avoiding extreme symptoms rather than strict glucose targets.

On June 29, 2021,Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care staff from Penfield and Williamsville locations joined together for the Gold Club Dinner at Park County Club in Williamsville, NY to commemorate employee achievements and dedication. This year marks 43 years since Heathwood welcomed its’ first residents! The Gold Club celebrates staff who have been with the company greater than five years and recognizes excellence in performance. This year’s dinner had double the celebrations, honoring those who earned awards in both 2020 and 2021!

This year our Gold Club boasts 57 members ! Of the 57 members who worked five years or more, 33 of them are at the Williamsville location, 16 at Penfield, and eight at CCNY. We are thrilled to have such longevity in our staff, who form the backbone of excellence and experienced, compassionate care that we provide our loved ones!

Rhonda, formerly in our nursing department and now our new Assistant Case Manager, is also extremely reliable, consistent and lends an extra hand wherever needed. It is hard to believe it has been ten months since COVID-19 became a daily household topic of conversation in our area. In the months since we began this journey, much has been accomplished in the way of safeguarding our residents, staff, and extended Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care family members from the ongoing pandemic.

The much-awaited COVID-19 vaccination rollout is underway at Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care! The first Pfizer shot was given to residents and staff who opted in at both our Williamsville and Penfield locations. So far, 95% of residents and almost 60% of staff choose to receive the vaccine. With more clinic dates coming up, we look forward to seeing these numbers increase as we all do our part to combat the virus.

Heathwood Assisted Living and Memory Care of Williamsville recently became the only assisted living in New York State to receive the 2020 Silver Award for “Achievement in Quality” from the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL). AHCA/NCAL represents more than 14,000 non-profit and proprietary skilled nursing centers, assisted living communities, sub-acute centers and homes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award program evaluates facilities annually to recognize progression from commitment to achievement—to excellence. The Award Program is a three-step process that encourages the continuous learning, development, and execution of integrated quality systems to achieve performance excellence. Each step requires a more detailed and comprehensive demonstration of quality integration and performance. The criteria for each step are based on the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program.

Our attentive nursing staff is available 24/7 to provide support for medication management and daily care needs. When residents take advantage of our on-site doctor’s appointments they are seen by doctors and nurse practitioners specializing in gerontology. In addition, all staff wear face masks, undergo daily screening prior to beginning work, and receive frequent COVID-19 testing.

New guidelines for visits at Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care

In the five months since Covid-19 effected local impact, changing the way adult care communities serve and care for our senior residents, much has been accomplished to illuminate the path to proactive, responsive safety protocols. During this time, staff has diligently outlined a plan for return to visitation, albeit on a limited, structured basis, in accordance with New York State Department of Health Guidelines.

Our residents and families of Heathwood communities in both Penfield and Williamsville inspired us these past several months with their creative, heart-warming ways of staying connected in meaningful ways amidst the evolving times. Now that the counties of both of our senior living communities are well underway into Phase 4, here is what you need to know about Heathwood Assisted Living and Memory Care’s requirements for reopened visitation, which will commence Monday, July 20th .

· Visitation will be limited to 30 minute sessions , two visitors during one time slot. The available time slots are: 10 am, 11am, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, or 7pm daily, including weekends . We cannot exceed 12 visitors per day in each of our communities, and we thank you for your understanding during this time!

· To request a visitation time, please call (716)688-0111 for our Williamsville community ; (585) 425-9663 for our Penfield community .Visitors will be scheduled into time slots on a first-come, first-serve basis.

· Each facility will have a designated Inside and Outside location.

· Visitors will be screened (questions and temperature checks, including questions on recent travel) prior to entry into the facility for signs of Covid-19, and can be denied entry if exhibiting symptoms.

· One of two visitors must be 18 years or older. No one under the age of 16 can visit at this time.

· Visitors must wear a face covering at all times. If you do not have one, you will be provide done. Residents will also be wearing suitable PPE. Food and Beverages will be prohibited in the designated location so all parties can adhere to the face covering mandate.

· We ask that all visitors comply with established hand hygiene practices using available alcohol-based hand sanitizer, as well as heed all social distancing protocols .

· Staff will monitor, clean and disinfect visitation areas after each visit using EPA-approved disinfectant.

As Erie and Monroe Counties in New York commence the Phase 2 economic reopening after several months of social isolation, you can feel a palpable sense of anticipation, a cautious optimism in the air. The community at large is looking forward to enjoying the return to in-store retail shopping, hair salon/barbershop services and the like, even as a scaled-back experience with new safety protocols are in place.

At Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care , we continuously review our safety measures and guidance from the New York State Department of Health to keep in line with the best practices for the health and safety of our assisted living residents ,families and staff. First and foremost, we want to shout a loud, proud Thank You to our dedicated staff, who continue to inspire us with their unwavering focus on keeping our residents safe, healthy and happy. They are the pillars of compassion, kindness and professionalism in time of uncertainty.

As we prepare for our own eventual “reopening” as an Assisted Living Community , we do so with great care to establish safe precedent, monitor developments, and provide support to staff, residents, and families alike. Rethinking and redesigning our daily practices, along with the way we interact with one another is the foundation of successful reintegration .Since we have been successful for 12 long weeks, we are not looking forward to changing many current practices.

If you’ve been on our Heathwood Assisted Living at Williamsville and Heathwood Assisted Living at Penfield Facebook pages lately, you’ve seen some of the superbly creative ways our Heathwood families are getting innovative with staying connected . We tip our hats to you for rising to the challenge and helping show us how to have some fun with it!

If you’re used to seeing your family a certain day of the week, keep that routine! FaceTime, Zoom, Google hangouts, and other technologies are helpful tools to keep up socially-distanced get-togethers . You can still enjoy a happy hour, a chat over a lunch date, mass and prayer services—just with an iPad, laptop, or other mobile device. Many of these platforms have interactive features to allow for group chats and group video sessions. Wishing you could send a birthday card to that friend of yours? Send them an e-card ; if they don’t have an email, make them a homemade card and show them on video chat. Coordinate a birthday parade where each well-wisher comes by (six feet apart of course)!

While the bingo halls may be on hiatus for now, you can have fun surprising your friends by inviting them to a bingo game—that you created! Virtual bingo games allow you to create your own bingo boards and invite a number of friends to join you for a game. Imagine the themes you can think up (and have a hoot with)!

If you’re more of an introvert and would prefer to use this time to work on your connection to self, consider the ways you can renew yourself-connection. Journaling, playing music, yoga, meditation , reading—these are all ways to reconsider how you can explore and express both your bodily self and your spiritual self. Even as you enjoy this independent time, though, you’ll never have to feel alone, knowing you live in the best retirement community , surrounded by a loving, caring community at Heathwood Assisted Living we’re here for you when you need it!

Letter to Residents and Family Members

We know many of you continue to be concerned about the spread of COVID-19 (the new coronavirus) and how it is impacting us here at Heathwood. Ensuring residents are cared for in a safe and healthy environment is our first priority. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)have recommended a variety of steps that have been implemented to help reduce the potential of the virus to enter our building. However, we need your help in battling COVID-19.

We are following CDC guidelines to restrict all visitors to the facility unless medically necessary and all deliveries to a designated area of the facility. We have posted signs on our entryway doors to notify everyone of this policy and are actively screening anyone, including staff, who need to come into the building. This screening includes symptoms, travel and temperature checks. We are following strict handwashing procedures, wiping down frequently touched surfaces several times a day and using personal protective equipment (gloves, masks, gowns) as necessary. We are practicing social distancing as much as we can in out setting and are staying up to date with the latest recommendations from CDC and local and state health departments.

We strongly encourage limited resident outings to only medically necessary appointments and ask that you call ahead to let us know that you are taking your loved one to an appointment so we can bring them to the front desk. Our in-house physicians are available 24/7 for phone calls and visits as medically necessary. Telemedicine is being offered by some practitioners as well. Please contact the Resident Care Manager with any questions regarding physician visits.

If your loved one needs supplies, you may bring them to the front vestibule where a cart is set up. Please label anything you bring in with who it is for and their room/apartment number. Our staff will deliver the items in a timely manner.

We know connecting with your loved one is incredibly important, and we are here to help. Whether it be email, text, video chat or social medial. Please follow our Facebook page for daily updates and pictures. Staff are available to assist with Facetime calls, if requested. Contact the Case Manager to arrange for a call. Be sure to check our website for the monthly activities calendar but know that it is subject to change as we continue to adjust to changing needs.

Celebrating National Nutrition Month

What better time for seniors to review their nutritional habits than today, as we celebrate National Nutrition Month ? Enjoying a delicious meal is one of the great joys in life! Everybody can remember their favorite dinner that Mom or Dad lovingly cooked, or that special dessert you whipped up for your loved ones to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries.

While some of our recipes may be tried and true, trying anew spin on an old recipe is an easy way we can incorporate different ingredients into classic favorites and have nutritious fun with it too! That cheesy corn casserole you make? Try adding rolled oats to it to give you sustained energy throughout the day. Walnuts, kale, beets, avocados—these are all energy-packed foods seniors can add to their repertoire that have a variety of health benefits, from protein-rich to antioxidant-plentiful.

Looking for more of a diet that can ease elderly symptoms of arthritis and other chronic conditions? Fruits and vegetables, wholegrains, fatty fish (think sardines, salmon, tuna), beans, olive oil and nuts are the mainstays of an anti-inflammatory diet . With Saint Patrick’s Day around the bend, don’t be shy with the cabbage! Not only is it loaded with Vitamin C and anti-inflammatory properties—it’s also heart-healthy and good for your digestive system, with fiber, potassium, and magnesium.

Herbs can be a fun, easy way to help boost your body and make the most of your retirement years too. Ginger, for example, may aid digestion, ease cold/flu, and contribute to cardiovascular health , while the closely-related turmeric is antioxidant-packed and anti-inflammatory as well.(If you’re not sure how to start, try mixing turmeric into a spoon of peanut butter, or sipping on a spot of ginger tea to see how you like it first).Having trouble sleeping or feeling anxious? Mix a few drops of liquid lavenderinto your lemonade and inhale the scent before you indulge! It’ll help you relax and add a swanky touch to your next senior community cocktail hour.

Five Easy Ways Seniors Can Curb Winter Boredom

Expert weather forecaster groundhog Punxsutawney Phil gave us good news earlier this month that his shadow was amiss: an early spring is in store for us! While our furry friend’s news is something we can all huzzah about, here are five elderly-friendly ways seniors can curb cabin fever until spring catches up.

1. Take a musical trip around the world . You can ask friends to share with you some of their more eclectic music collection tastes. Make a list of countries around the world you’ve never been to and find samples of their music to play online. Perhaps you joined us on our Heathwood Assisted Living and Memory Care outing to the Amherst Symphony Orchestra or our singalong with the Treble Makers in Penfield earlier this month. There are many ways you can experience travel in your retirement years— much within your senior community!

2. Learn a new skill . Pluck out a few notes on a new instrument. Are you crafty? Dabble in a different medium: clay, paint, chalk—the sky is the limit. See if you can learn a few words in a new language (bonus: there’s extra fun in this as your friends and family will be impressed with your savoir-faire).

3. Get out and get moving! Yes, there’s still some snow on the ground, but that’s never stopped us before. The sun is rising earlier and setting later each day, so Mother Nature is on our side! Bundle up and go out for lunch with friends, take in a movie matinee or a quick mid-day stroll around your senior living grounds with your caregiver. Silver Sneakers shows us a few exercises seniors can start with if you feel you need a tune-up after the long winter.

4. Heat up some of your favorite warm weather foods . Grilled hotdogs, fresh fruit smoothies, pasta salads—a few tasty reminders that spring is around the bend.

5. Host a fun get-together . Invite your friends over to your independent senior living apartment for a poetry slam, homemade Jeopardy contest, or other entertaining theme of your choosing. Grand Opening Celebration held on October 8, 2019

The following is an excerpt from Carla Suero’s speech at the Grand Opening Celebration on October 8, 2019. Carla Suero is President and CEO at Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care.

We are so pleased we have such a great turnout today. We are so proud of our 41-year history in this building. There have been at least six renovations over the years – for whatever reason we always seem to change the location of the porte cochere and the front door. We thought it was fitting to have the ceremony in this location.

There are five people who are with us today who have worked in this building the entire 41 years. Bob Chur, Nancy Toney, Judy Carpenter, Donna Dadswell and Donna Van Horn. These folks are the backbone of our stellar reputation and we are eternally grateful to them for adapting so easily though all the changes.

I think everyone can appreciate all the hard work that goes into a project like this. A special shout out to thank Michele Ladouceur our Administrator and Dave Duffy the Environmental Services Manager her at the Williamsville location. They both worked tirelessly over the last year. I also want to thank all the staff. We truly have the best of the best! It is very difficult to deal with the day to day operations of an existing building and trying to open an addition at the same time.

Thank you to the whole team. It is an honor to work with all of you!

Music, Mutts, & More - October 2019 Events & Activities | Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care

As L.M. Montgomery wrote in Anne of Green Gables ,“I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” We at Heathwood love this month, too. The busy back-to-school rush of September has ceded to the brisk beauty of October with its crunch of fall leaves and the snuggly warmth of dressing in layers. Cute gourd pets (made by the residents last month) decorate our home, along with traditional fall wreaths and rustic flower arrangements lovingly parceled around by the Activities staff. The 31 days of October are overflowing with color, vitality, and activities; to miss them would be “ghoulish”!

On Friday, October 4 ,Pat Cook will delight us with her musical portrayals of women country singers. She has been at Heathwood before—she sang Patsy Cline songs last time—and will highlight several musical giants this time.

Sunday, October 6 , is Fluffernutter Day, replete with the gooey, delicious pea-nutty marshmallow concoction we all love to spread on toast, bread, or whatever makes us lick our lips. How about on bananas or a pretzel bun? October 8 is National Fluffernutter Day, invented way back in 1917 by Archibald Query in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Tuesday, October 15 , we will be visited by a cadre of canines. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill mutts. They are sniffer dogs trained and used by the New York State police to detect substances such as explosives , illegal drugs ,wildlife scat, currency, blood , and contraband electronics. This is sure to be a memorable demonstration.

We are looking forward to our outing on Sunday, October20 , to hear the outstanding Amherst Symphony Orchestra (ASO) performing at Amherst Middle School. This is the first of four free concerts they “gift” the community throughout the year. This concert features conductor Dr. Armenio, dean and director of the Houghton College Great batch School of Music and an accomplished clarinetist and saxophonist, and guest artist Soo Yuen Kim on violin.

“Oktoberfest” at Heathwood is on Tuesday, October 22 ,and is sure to be a favorite with the residents. Live German music will surely add a sweetness to the already delicious potato pancakes that are planned along with other treats.

A trip to the Great Pumpkin Farm in Clarence on Wednesday, October 23 , will be an excursion to enjoy the petting zoo, bakery, candy store, shop in the Halloween store for decorations and gifts, and of course, buy pumpkins!

The last two days of the month are packed with fun and silly antics. On Wednesday, October 30 , residents are invited to the Witches’ Brew Party where we will sing Halloween carols to the tune of Christmas carols, among other fun activities. On Halloween, October 31 , our own Jim Coates ,activities director, will be the Mad Scientist, regaling us with crazy experiments featuring Halloween candy.

We love the fall season — because at Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care, we have so much to look forward to and enjoy.

Not only do we relish the luscious colors Mother Nature uses to paint the leaves and the crisp-like-an-apple air we breathe, but September is National Senior Center Month highlighting ‘aging well’. At Heathwood Assisted Living and Memory Care we practice “care without compromise,” ensuring residents are treated with dignity and respect. Our profession al care teams are second to none and reflect one of our core values — A Passion for Excellence . Staff longevity is a testament that “teamwork” is a value we hold high. Congratulations to Nancy Toney, an exceptional home health aide, who is celebrating her 40th anniversary at Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care in Williamsville, NY.

Currently people age 65 or over make up nearly 490 million of the world’s population. Senior centers and assisted living residences like Heathwood are integral to aging well. When a senior citizen can’t live alone in their own home, moving into a private apartment at Heathwood Assisted Living can lead to an active new chapter in an already fulfilling life.

The trained staff at Heathwood Assisted Living work hard to provide an environment that is full of innovative programming that engages the whole person. On the spiritual level, residents have an opportunity to practice their faith and participate in many faith services and ceremonies. To keep the body fit, we offer daily exercises like fitness class, armchair yoga, and Better Balance.

Keeping the mind active is a priority as well. Brain Games, Quarter Bingo, and games like Euchre and Scrabble give residents a chance to have fun and exercise their frontal lobe, the largest region of the brain. That’s just plain smart.

NationalAssisted Living Week is celebrated September 8-14th. Our theme is “A Spark of Creativity.” From Monday all the way through Friday, we are non-stop with special guests, musical creativity, Heathwood family tree making, and much more! Can you believe September 23rd is already the first day of fall? Speaking of fall, September 23rd is also Fall Prevention Awareness Day . Did you know falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans? There are lots of ways to reduce the risk of falling. Some include wearing the right shoes, moving more carefully, installing grab bars or handrails, lighting the walkway, and many more.

Sweet Treats, Picnics and Music at Heathwood in Williamsville, NY

If you have ever visited Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care, you can count on one hand the number of rocking chairs you have seen. That’s because residents here lead full and meaningful lives and they don’t have much time to occupy a rocking chair. They are busy in a multitude of activities, from fitness classes and brain games to outings and on-site entertainment. When they’re not engaged in an activity, they are probably hanging out in the outdoor patio or enjoying some quiet time in their living quarters—which may be a suite apartment, a studio apartment, or a one- or two-bedroom accommodation. If you think it’s dull here, you don’t know Heathwood. Take the word of Betty, a favorite resident, who said, “I’m not bored. I enjoy going outside and walking a bit, then up to my floor and walking some more.”

August Is Heating Up

This month is ripe with themes of sweet treats , picnics , and musi c. The line up is spectacular, and there’s something for everyone, no matter if you’re8 or 80.

Sunday afternoons are punctuated by something delicious for every palate. On August4 , residents may imbibe in an afternoon break by biting into an ice cream sandwich as part of National Ice Cream Sandwich Day (which falls on August 2).What’s not to love about ice cream in any flavor on any day? Besides, the first Sunday in August is National Friendship Day, too. What do you get when you combine ice cream and good friends? Pure joy!

On August11 , residents are invited to the backyard for a sweet iced tea social. Nothing quenches the thirst more than an ice-cold glass of iced tea, especially when you’re surrounded by the friends you live with.

The last Sunday of the month— August 25 —is a perfect day to devour and savor watermelon kiwi smoothies. Kiwi contains twice the amount of vitamin C as oranges and watermelon is an excellent agent in keeping you hydrated. Combined, this pair makes a perfect complement to an afternoon get-together.

Heathwood Family Picnic

Summer is not complete around here without the Heathwood Family Picnic. What do we mean by family? First and foremost, our residents are family. Other important members of the family are staff and residents’ families. We look forward to gathering in the back yard on T uesday, August 27 , at 5:00 p.m., to celebrate summer together. Yeah, we know National Eat Outside Day is the last day of the month, but we’re going to celebrate early. Won’t you join us?

A Menagerie of Music

Ask any resident and they will tell you that here at Heathwood there is no shortage of musical offerings. Whether it’s staying in or going out, we offer a plethora of concerts. For example, those who sign up will be heading to Williamsville on Tuesday, August 6 , at 6:30 p.m. to enjoy “Main Street USA,” a concert presented by the Amherst Symphony Orchestra. There will be food trucks too. The concert features Al Schlisserman on the accordion and Calvin Cich, baritone. Summer conductor is Bryan Eckenrode.

On Wednesday, August 7 , at 6:00 p.m., you’re invited to make our back yard your back yard and listen to the sounds of the Nitetones. But be forewarned: you may want to get up out of your chair and dance to a variety of hit tunes from the ’50sthrough the ’90s. National Book Lovers Day—August 9

Is there a book lover or book worm in your life? This is a great day to put down your Smartphone, step away from the computer, and pull the earbuds out of your canals. Grab a book—you could even borrow one from our library near the reception area—and go out on our patio when the sun is shining. Why not read to your favorite senior citizen at Heath wood? Also, it’s a good day to check out the Personality Profile on our Heathwood celebrity of sorts, former editor and writer Veronica Hogle, in the Heathwood Highlights (August).

National Senior Citizens Day—August 21

Did you know there are more than 1,500national days? That’s a ton! But National Senior Citizens Day is near and dear to our hearts because, at Heathwood, we love our seniors! They give meaning to the work we do and every day they help us remember what’s truly important. If you have a senior citizen in your life, this is a perfect opportunity to show your love and appreciation.

Summertime and the Living is Easy at Heathwood Assisted Living & Memory Care in Penfield, NY!

It’s officially August and summer is going by so quickly! But don’t sweat it, there are still plenty of warm, sunny days ahead of us. If you have been busy indoors, it’s time to take the party outside and enjoy some food, soaking up the sun, or read a good book by the lake. Before you know it, we’ll soon be digging out our sweaters and boots again!

We will be enjoying the warm weather with many exciting social activities and great entertainment. Be sure to check out our August Calendar of events for a complete listing and times. Also check out the events and activities in Memory Care here .

On August 2nd, it is national ice cream sandwich day. Did you know that the original ice cream sandwich was invented back in 1899in New York City? It was known for being hand-held and portable and to this day they do not know the name of the pushcart peddler who thought of this ingenious idea. Don’t forget to enjoy the ice cream in the courtyard on the 14th.

Starting on the 12th of this month, we have a whole week dedicated to music. We will be having amazing performances by Bob Neusatz, Top Brass, and our very own Heathwood Songbirds. We also have a trip planned to the Ontario Beach Park for a summer concert by Dady Bros.

Make sure to join us on our trips to the Finger Lakes Race Track on August 7th, the Log Cabin restaurant for dinner and a car show on August 21st as well as our trip to the Red Wing baseball game on August 22nd. There’s a lot more going on this month so be sure to check out our activities calendar !

This month it is also National Eye Exam and Immunization Awareness Month. It’s a good time to visit the doctor for your yearly checkups, before the cold and flu season hits us again. If you have questions, you can ask one of our nurses for help.

There are still plenty of festivals going on such as the Park Avenue Summer Art Festival on August 3rd and 4th. For kid friendly activities, head to the Seneca Park Zoo or The Strong Museum for plenty of things to see and do. Parents and grandparents know that kids go back to school next month, so we hope you enjoy the rest of the summer together as a family.

National Anti-Boredom Month

Did you know that July is National Anti-Boredom Month? According to the experts—who are never bored because they are studying the science of boredom—people get bored after the hoopla of Independence Day festivities. At Heathwood Assisted Living &Memory Care, we work hard to plan activities that keep you entertained and stimulated. July is a great month to live at Heathwood and invite a friend or family member to join you.

Niagara Frontier Fiddlers—Thursday, July 4, at 2:00 p.m.

Bluegrass. Old country songs. Classics. Train songs. Irish and Scottish music. It’s all good. Join us as we welcome the Niagara Frontier Fiddle Club with their old-time music on this patriotic holiday, a day we mark as the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. We are hoping for great weather, so we can frolic in the backyard.

Uke ladies—Friday, July 12, time TBD

Marlene Marciniak and Claudia Kurtzworth are the Uke ladies. While they won’t be wearing grass skirts while they strum their ukuleles, they will delight listeners with vintage songs that senior citizens will remember from days gone by. Claudia is a lifelong musician and Marlene has come late to the scene, but she enjoys performing with her friend, who taught her to play the instrument.

The Legend Show—Friday, July 16, at 2:00 p.m.

Husband and wife singing duo from Tennessee, Stacy and Gina Cooper, comprise the Legend Show . Let them sing you down memory lane to memorable classics by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Patsy Cline, and Aretha Franklin. The Coopers have been performing for more than 15years and have appeared in Las Vegas, Dollywood, Opryland, and they routinely sing on cruise ships and in churches. When they are not the Legend Show, they sing southern gospel favorites under the label New Road 2 and have recorded 16 CDs and three legend CDs.

“Taste of the Network”—Tuesday, July 23, from 12-4 p.m. at Amherst Center for Senior Services

Heathwood is gearing up for the 10thannual Network in Aging of WNY’s “Taste of the Network” at the Amherst Center for Senior Services, 370 John James Audubon Pkwy., Amherst. This is an annual, signature event when a dozen or more senior and assisted living facilities and nonprofit organizations come together to network and share favorite dishes, entrees, desserts, and appetizers. Some garner awards, making them the envy of all.

Ismailia Shriners Chanters—Monday, July 29, at 6:30 p.m.

The Shriners International is a fraternity based on fun, fellowship, and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth with nearly 200 chapters in several countries and thousands of clubs around the world. The Ismailia Shrine Center is located at 1600 Southwestern Blvd. Buffalo. Chanter units in shrine temples were originally organized to perform the chants by nobles as part of the ceremonial initiation. As time passed, the chanter units expanded their activity to providing vocal entertainment at many and varied affairs. They have won the North American championship nine times. Their director, Jeff Trenchard, is a music teacher at Mill Middle School in Williamsville. Our mailman, Dick, is a member of the Ismailia Chanters.

Purple Ribbon Employees

You may have noticed the purple ribbons on some staff members’ name badges. These special ribbons signify that they are part of a select group of Heathwood employees—23 to be exact—who are part of anew pilot program through the Alzheimer’s Association that is transforming dementia care by improving communication between caregivers and those living with dementia. According to Administrator Michele Ladouceur, “Heathwood is a premier provider in Western NY, the first to be certified in memory care.”

The Village of Williamsville may have Music on Main—Thursdays throughout thesummer—but here at Heathwood Assisted Living in Williamsville, we have musicyou can sway to every Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Wellness Room 2. Does it get anybetter? No way, baby.

On June 7 ,come listen to TomBender , who makes us all happy withhis guitar and songs. He’s a regular at Heathwood and based on the opinion ofalmost two dozen people (according to his Facebook page), he scores a 5 out of5 for his entertainment value. Who wouldn’t want to get in on some of that?

June 14 brings us Instant Replay , a men’s trio that harmonizes to the tunes ofbig band sounds like Glenn Miller’s “Moonlight Serenade” or Mack Gordon’s“Chattanooga Choo Choo.” By the way, did you know that Dave May, who playssaxophone in the band, is the son-in-law of our very own Fredericka Sobieski? Pardon me , friend, will you be at the“station” at 2?

June 21 , the first day of summer, ushers in one of ourfavorite entertainers at Heathwood, Lyle Stang . He renders songs like “LeadMe from the Darkness” and “Amazing Grace” in a way that makes us wish he wouldsing all afternoon and into the darkness. But of course, he can’t—he does havea life—so be sure to join him and bring your smile. It is the first day ofsummer, remember?

On June28 , the last Friday of our June music series, as the sun is beginning toset on the month of June, you will want to reward yourself with a little bit ofsunshine. JuddSunshine , that is. He’ll bring hiskeyboard and his talents as a pianist and a vocalist—more than 30 years’worth!—and have us singing along to popular tunes such as Billy Joel’s “Justthe Way You Are.” For this get together, there’s no need to change the color of your hair or try some new fashion , I’ll take you just the way you are .

Father’s Day
Father’s Day in Australia is celebrated on the first Sunday in September. InCatholic Europe, apparently, it is celebrated on March 19, ever since theMiddle Ages. That’s a long time. In Finland, dads get their day in thelimelight on the second Sunday of November. Cool, huh? Here at Heathwood, andmost of the rest of the world (except the places we just mentioned and probablysome others), we buy a card and maybe a gift to say, “Aw, Dad, thanks!” onSunday, June 16. Join us at 3 that day in Wellness Room 1 to celebrate with“Greatest TV Dads.”

Soothing and cheerful. Exciting and brash. What will you hear during theperformance by the Lancaster High SchoolSteel Drums performance on Wednesday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. in thebackyard? The sound of the steel drum is vast, and describing it is like tryingto herd cats. So, I won’t attempt that here—herding cats or describing thesound. Perhaps after you experience this for yourself, you can describe whatyou hear. Whatever it is—soothing, cheerful, exciting, brash or something altogetherdifferent—you will be glad you came. Heathwood Residents are sure to enjoy the special activities this month

Spending time socializing with others and enjoying the sunny days in June is an important part of life at Heathwood Assisted Living &Memory Care in Penfield, NY! The first day of summer is officially June 21st.We’re almost there! Mark your calendars for some fun-filled activities outdoors with our Heathwood crew and residents.

Our courtyard will be open for activities this month and we plan to enjoy our time soaking up the sun with root beer floats, ice cream and great company of course! We will also be heading out many times this month for lunches and afternoon day trips, including a summer picnic at B. Forman Park. If you have never been there, it is a great place to watch the water and enjoy the cool lake breeze on a warm, summer’s day. On June 26th we will be out to enjoy a lunch at the award-winning restaurant Warfield’s in Clifton Springs. The historic restaurant and bakery is a must-see for its grand architecture and European influences, so don’t forget to bring your camera along for those snap shots.

Last month we celebrated the wonderful ladies in our lives on Mother’s Day but we also want to honor and recognize the men in our lives this month. On June 16th we will be celebrating all the fathers and fatherly figures and what they mean to each and every one of us. We will behaving a Father’s Day luncheon at Heathwood on June 16th to celebrate all the fathers and grandfathers!

For our Heathwood song birds and music lovers, we have plenty of entertaining musical features this month. On June 3rd we will have a Retired Teachers Chorus come in to perform for us. On June 10thwe have a Magic Show with Steve Ingram, which is certainly going to been joy able. On June 24th the Rochester Rhapsody chorus will be sharing their talents and singing in beautiful harmony at Heathwood. We will also have our regular choir practices throughout the month so we can brush up on our own singing pipes in time for our next performance!

We are excited about the lineup of outdoor activities this month and we hope that our residents and their families will enjoy spending the summer months with all of us.

Snowdrops, daffodils , and crocuses, oh my! As the earth reawakens to another spring, the residents are longing for their own kind of rebirth. As the temperatures rise and each day’s light lingers, we look forward with anticipation to the opening of the sun room, which beckons in the wonder and beauty and light of the outdoors. The back yard is coming alive in preparation for summer, a lovely time when friends and family gather outdoors to share a picnic, chat about old times and current events, or listen to the sounds of a local band. In many ways, living at Heathwood feels just like being at home listening to Lawrence Welk. Some have even been known to bust a move or two!

At Heathwood it doesn’t matter how many candles you have on your cake—72 or 102—every birthday is a special opportunity to say “Hey, I’m tickled pink that you were born!” On Friday, May 3, we will gladly and wholeheartedly indulge in cake and ice cream together, in the dining room during lunch. Instead of counting calories, we will count our blessings for every person here who entrusts his or her future to us. Sing it with me now: ‘ Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you! ’And don’t worry, we’re right here on hand to help blow out that last stubborn candle that just won’t be snuffed!

Whether you like horses or not, you can’t deny the sheer excitement and contagious energy that pervades the media and all our homes when America’s greatest race—the Kentucky Derby—kicks off. Whether you have stakes in the race or not, there’s something about this historical event that makes even the most cynical person smile. I sit the majestic beauty of the horses? Is it the athletic prowess of the jockeys? Is it the remarkable hats that adorn the women? Is it the rose garland that first appeared when the winner, Ben Brush, received a floral arrangement of white and pink roses in 1896? Whatever it is that captures the hearts of people everywhere, we at Heathwood will be watching it together on May 4 during our very own “Run for the Roses.” We’re not horsing around when we say, we’re off to the races!

Eighty-one million pounds of avocados. That’s the amount that Americans consume around the nation when they celebrate Cinco de Mayo on May 5. Contrary to popular opinion, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day. It commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla. At Heathwood we love an opportunity to party, and Cinco de Mayo provides a perfect backdrop. You can be sure that our amazing Wellness Team, led by Jim, is already planning a fun-filled celebration, and it may even include somewhat less than 81-millionpounds of guacamole!

When we say we love our volunteers, just what do we mean by that? Simply put, we love our volunteers! They run the gift shop that has so many important little things like candy bars and toothpaste. They help our staff provide one-on-one attention during a craft-making adventure. They go with us on excursions to parks and places. They dress up like clowns and make our residents feel young again. So yes, we love our volunteers because they enhance the home that is Heathwood. We are so thrilled to be able to recognize all those who go the extra mile, during our annual Appreciation Luncheon, on May 8.

A highlight of happenings and events

Time to dust off those sunglasses because the sun is finallystarting to make a regular appearance! If you look around outside you’ll alsonotice the blooming flowers and fresh greenery. We love this time of year andwe hope you get to enjoy some time outside, whether it’s taking a quick walk orenjoying some ice cream on a warm day!

We have a ton of great activities planned this month. Forall music lovers, we have the Penfield Symphony Orchestra Concert on May 6th. For food and flower fans,the lilacs will be blooming again in Rochester and we have a lunch date plannedout at Jines Restaurant followed by a Lilac Festival ride on May 10th. The lilacs only bloom for a short period in Mayand are gone by June, so you don’t want to miss the opportunity to see them infull bloom.

We would also like to celebrate the month of May byappreciating the women in our lives who have taken care of us – whether you’rea mom-to-be, mom or grandmother, you are so loved! At Heathwood we love hearingstories from residents about their experiences of motherhood and we love to seefamilies from different generations coming in to spend time with their lovedones. We have some exciting Mother’s Day themed events this month at Heathwood.Join us for a tea party on May 9, and a special luncheon followed by musicalentertainment by Daniel Henry onMay 12th. We will be handing out some flowers for all the lovelyladies at Heathwood, so you don’t want to miss it!

This May, Heathwood is also celebrating our 9thanniversary. That’s right – we opened back on May 10, 2010. Time flies whenyou’re having fun! When we reflect on those years, it comes down to ourexcellent and caring staff and wonderful residents, volunteers and families whohave supported us throughout the years. We hope you have enjoyed being a partof Heathwood’s history as we have.

We also don’t want to forget about our nurses, who worktirelessly to take care of our residents here at Heathwood but also all overthe country! National Nurse’s Week is May 6th-11th. Ifyou can take a moment to personally thank a nurse for taking care of you oryour loved one, it really brightens up their day! From all of us at Heathwood,we thank you for all that you do.

April is the perfect time to try new activities

Spring is finally in the air and all of us here at Heathwood Assisted Living and Memory Care are ready to welcome the new season! The days are getting longer and warmer, the flowers are beginning to bloom and the leaves beginning to bud. It’s time to put away the winter gear, and our Activities Calendars in Penfield and Williamsville are full of ways to help us stay active this spring.

Have you thought about taking on a new project? While the sun is out and the days are brighter, this is a great opportunity to start doing the things you love! Whether that is painting, reading or crafts, there is plenty to do during your own time or with other residents during activities. If your private apartment is feeling a little cluttered and running out of room, a bit of spring cleaning is refreshing and can help promote a new sense of motivation for new projects. You may even want to put up some fresh flowers or hang some spring themed wreaths on your door to get into the spring mood.

Our calendars are full of fun and exciting activities for the Spring season:

At Heathwood in Penfield we are having a Spring Tea Party on April 13th, a Spring Ice Cream Social on April 25th and many more spring-themed activities including gardening, outdoor trips and walks in the sun! To celebrate Easter our big Heathwood Easter Egg Hunt is on Good Friday (April 19th)followed by an Easter Bunny Social. There will be plenty of opportunities to work on those spring projects as a group with our Easter Egg Coloring activity on April 20th. On Easter Sunday we will have mass followed by an Easter dinner.

Heathwood in Williamsville is celebrating the Spring season with a special concert by Spring Fling on Friday, April 12. And on Tuesday, April 16 a special trip to the Broadway Market in Buffalo, NY will be sure to bring back many childhood memories and family traditions.

Mark your calendars for The Heathwood Open House and Spring Craft and Chocolate Sale on Friday, April 12th at Heathwood Assisted Living in Penfield. You are invited to come and tour our facility anytime between 9am-5pm. After your tour, between 11am-3:15pm our craft sale will take place and you can purchase some gifts for loved ones or for yourself. A Resident Basket Raffle with beautiful prizes will benefit our community partner, Lifespan .

April is Rainbows and Raindrops Month, Habitat Awareness Month, Recycle It Month and the month we celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day. It’s going to be a “tree”riffic month. With a focus on conservation efforts and preserving the eco-system it is “raining” great programs this month. “Leaf” it to our Wellness Department to plan a month full of activities, some of which might be a little “sappy” but they’re sure to be fun and maybe even a bit “acorn”y.

Combating Isolation During the Winter in Western New York

It is no secret that winter in Buffalo and Rochester can be brutal. Lake effect snow and record-breaking cold temperatures are enough to keep anyone inside. But for our senior population, this severe weather is especially difficult.

Staying indoors for long periods can negatively affect the health and well-being of elderly individuals. Even those seniors who are living independently and are normally active can become lonely and isolated during the winter months. Reduced activity levels and minimal social interaction can lead to depression and are potential risks for dementia.

But at Heathwood Assisted Living, residents enjoy an active lifestyle no matter what the weather is like outdoors! According to the Alzheimer’s Association social and mental activities can help keep your brain healthy.

The activities calendars for our Penfield, NY and Williamsville, NY locations are always full of fun, interesting, and worthwhile events in and out of the buildings.

Below are highlights of the many activities planned this month.

Valentine’s Day and Black History Month at Heathwood in Penfield, NY

At Heathwood we shower our residents with an extra helping of love on Valentine’s Day. We are so excited to be celebrating this day of love with our residents –so instead of making it just one day of activities, we’re making it a whole week of non-stop fun!

It’s not possible to celebrate Valentine’s Day without indulging in some delicious food and treats. We’ve got you covered at Heathwood! We will be taking our residents out to Phillip’s European Restaurant on February 13th to enjoy some classic European delicacies like the chocolate raspberry torte or a fresh fruit tart. Since you can never have too much dessert, we are also making our own valentine’s themed cookies on the 12thand 13th of February.

On Valentine’s Day we will serenade our residents with special songs about love during our musical program. Our choir will also be getting together to sing and perform for the rest of our residents and staff. To cap off the night, we will be showing our valentine’s movie “My Secret Valentine” in our movie theater, complete with popcorn of course!

February is also Black History Month, a time to be reminded of the contributions and history of African Americans. We will be featuring movies throughout the month that touch on themes of courage, hopes and dreams, and diversity. On February21st, we will be having a Black History luncheon at Heathwood to celebrate this occasion.

With all these activities planned we anticipate a fun-filled month for our resident sand their families and while we appreciate our residents every day of the year, we hope they feel the extra special love from us here at Heathwood this month.

All music lovers are invited to attend the Amhers tSymphony Orchestra concert on Sunday, February 10. The theme, ‘An American Experience’ will be sure to delight all who attend.

Valentine’s Day is Thursday, February 14. Residents will enjoy a special lunch with surprises, including renowned violinist Gregory Decenko strolling both dining rooms and taking requests.

We are taking orders for The Hospice Bouquet Sale . Please place your order with the receptionist before February 20th. Bouquets will be delivered March 4-5.

Volunteering at Heathwood

As we begin a new year, we would like to sincerely thank those individuals who volunteer in our communities. We recognize them for giving their time and talents to help enrich the lives of everyone at Heathwood Assisted Living. Volunteering at Heathwood has many benefits for residents and the volunteer. We invite anyone looking to in volunteering in the community to see how Heathwood is the right place for you.

Do you play a musical instrument, enjoy making crafts or playing cards? Then Heathwood is a good place to volunteer. Every volunteer's talent is welcome to share with the residents at Heathwood. Our volunteers include a connoisseur in classical music, story tellers and gifted craft makers. At Heathwood in Williamsville, our volunteers manage the lovely gift shop putting their professional management skills to work to raise funds to support community activities.

At Heathwood Assisted Living, we know residents also really value companionship of others. This is something many people can offer by coming in to visit, participating in activities and just spending time with residents. We are always in need of card players, especially for everyone's favorite game, Bridge. We also welcome volunteers to join us on our fun and exciting trips to concerts, the lakes and of course, Wegmans!

We would also like to thank organizations in the community, including local churches that have voluntarily sent people to perform church services, and schools for entertaining our residents with student performances. Scouting troops are always welcome to visit and share their talents too!

“Weather” you’re ready or not, here comes December with a blizzard of events! On the home front, you’ll find a flurry of activities, and like snowflakes, no two are alike. For those of you daring enough to venture out into the elements with us, the forecast calls for a good time. Special thanks go out to the many church and scouting groups that are scheduled to visit Heathwood Assisted Living at Williamsville over the holiday season.

The highlight of the month is the Heathwood Annual Holiday Party on Thursday, December 13 from 6pm – 8pm.Holiday music is provided by Maria Angelova. This is a very popular event, so there is a limit of two guests per resident. Please RSVP by 12/7 by calling reception at 688-0111. Please wear your most festive holiday socks!

Thanks to everyone who attended the beautiful concert performed by the Amherst Symphony Orchestra on December 2nd.

December is full of special activities at Heathwood Assisted Living at Penfield

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – and our residents at Heathwood are getting into the holiday spirit this month with lots of music, craft making and a fun holiday themed party!

We love music here at Heathwood and our residents especially enjoy listening to Christmas songs. We are very excited to attend the Penfield
Symphony’s Holiday Concert as a group along with the Penfield community, but the musical festivities don’t end there!

Talented singers will be performing right here at Heathwood throughout the month, such as The Rochester Retired Teachers, The Spry Middle School, AMPS (American Music Pop Salute), The Treble Makers, Josh Shapiro, Jasmine Kiley and her classical quartet, St. Joseph’s Youth Group, Perinton Senior Chorus, Charles Finney High School Chorus and Concert Band, Oasis Tappers, Penfield Senior High School Chorus, Cobble Elementary 1st Graders, “Music For Love” Christmas Eve Concert and many, many more.

Our very own talented group of residents, known as our Heathwood Songbirds and Chime Choir, will be also be performing on December 23rd at Heathwood.

We are bringing the Old English to Heathwood during the week of December 10thto the 14th with a Dicken’s themed holiday party. We will be showing the classic movie ‘A Christmas Carol’ in our very own movie theater and will be serving a traditional English dinner.

We have even more great news about the Rochester Business Journal’s Reader Rankings . Last month we revealed that Heathwood Assisted Living at Penfield was among the winners in the Assisted Living category. The winners were celebrated at the first annual Rochester Reader Rankings Gala on August 1st where it was announced that Heathwood was named the Best Assisted Living Facility!

Through multiple rounds of nominations and voting our families, friends, and fans supported us to take the leading spot as top winner in assisted living.

Heathwood was nominated earlier this year when Rochester Business Journal and The Daily Record asked readers to nominate their favorite companies to be included on the Reader Rankings ballot. We were nominated among four other assisted living communities in the Health Care category.

Once the nominations were in, the second round of voting opened, and Heathwood was named a finalist. We received the most votes for Assisted Living and earned a plaque honoring the achievement at the Reader Rankings Gala.

“Often, it’s the little everyday moments in assisted living between staff and residents that strengthen bonds, enrich lives, and improve care,” said Bonnie Goodwin, Administrator. “Our care is what sets us apart and we’re honored to be recognized for what we do every day.”

Friday afternoons at Heathwood Assisted Living in Penfield are lively with music. It’s the day residents know they can look forward to Fun with Music – a group session led by Marcia Landgren, a registered music therapist.

Marcia started the music program at Heathwood in 2011 with a choir – the Heathwood Songbirds - and later, a chime choir was added.

As a teacher for more than 30 years, Marcia witnessed the benefits of music working with students of all ages. Seeing the way residents responded in choir practice, she approached the administrator, Bonnie Goodwin, about adding a weekly music therapy session as well. She explained the benefits of music therapy among older adults, particularly those dealing with loneliness and memory loss. Research has shown that music can enhance engagement, help with recall and language skills and can decrease feelings of depression and anxiety. And it’s fun!

Marcia proposed a 45-minute music session where the residents could sing and play instruments with the goals of improving social skills and reducing anxiety while having fun. The class was a hit and continues to be among the most well attended activities at Heathwood.

“I love to make music,” Marcia said, “that’s my passion. I like to bring people joy and music does that.”

Each week brings a different theme. Marcia carefully selects songs and plans sessions based on the needs and goals of each person. She brings instruments for the residents to play such as tambourines and drums. Incorporating movement, clapping and sometimes dancing along, helps to loosen up the body and increase circulation.

The sessions are especially effective in Memory Care where nearly every resident comes out to participate. One resident who normally has difficulty communicating will know every word to every song. She has memory loss and yet she can easily recall melody and lyrics.

Marcia has found that residents are drawn to her sessions because they don’t need special skills to participate – some come just to listen and tap along to the beat.

As an evening receptionist at Heathwood, Marcia’s day-to-day interactions with the residents helps her get to know them and learn about their interests. She can chat with the residents outside of class and choir practice to learn what type of music they enjoy and what they like to do. This helps her personalize her sessions and select songs for choir that the residents will know and remember.

Marcia also brings her personal experience to her sessions. Having lived in Hawaii for four years, Marcia had a special Hawaiian themed class during Luau week at Heathwood last month. The class featured traditional hulas and authentic Hawaiian instruments including an ipu – a percussion instrument.

While it might appear that Fun with Music is just about having fun and playing songs, there’s a lot more to it. It gives residents an opportunity to feel included and helps them to relax. They leave her sessions smiling and feeling cheerful.

Most of all, they love the music. “The music keeps them coming back,” Marcia said.

First, we’re excited to announce that Heathwood is sponsoringthe Amherst Symphony Orchestra Summer Concert! It will be Tuesday, August 7 @ 6:30pm at Island Park in the Village ofWilliamsville.

Make sure to bring a lawn chair & picnic supper, thisconcert will be going on whether there’s rain or shine!

Second is Heathwood’s Outdoor Summer Concert featuring The Nite Tones (rescheduled from 7/25). It will be Tuesday, August 21 @ 6:00pm at Heathwood Assisted Living at 815 Hopkins Rd in Williamsville!

Bring a lawn chair to this one too! Heathwood volunteers will be selling refreshments, raffles & 50/50 to raise funds for resident activities. It’s a great time for a great cause and we look forward to seeing you there!

We have some great news from our Rochester location! Each year the readers of The Rochester Business Journal and The Daily Record combine to nominate Monroe County organizations that display exceptional quality of service in their respective fields. The people have spoken… drumroll, please…. And Heathwood Assisted Living won the Assisted Living distinction within the Health Care category! We are so honored to receive the personal letter from Cheryl Dinolfo, Monroe Country Executive. She said that organizations like ours make the County of Monroe a wonderful place to live. So very humbling and a thank you to Cheryl!

This award is voted directly by the people, so we want to extend a true, heartfelt thank you to all of Rochester! We strive to improve each and every day and will only continue to excel. Dehydration is a common but often underestimated risk for older adults, especially those living in assisted living communities. While people of all ages need to stay hydrated, older adults face unique physiological and lifestyle challenges that make them more vulnerable to fluid loss and the health consequences that come with it.

For assisted living facilities, preventing dehydration isn’t just a matter of comfort—it’s a crucial aspect of resident health and safety. Whether it’s a warm day, a cool evening, or just part of daily life, ensuring consistent hydration is essential all year long.

This guide explores the causes, signs, and how we work on preventing dehydration in our assisted living facility, while preserving the dignity of each resident.

Why Older Adults Are at Greater Risk of Dehydration

Aging bodies undergo changes that reduce the body’s ability to conserve water and detect thirst. Combine that with common medications, health conditions, and mobility limitations, and the risk increases significantly.

1. Diminished Thirst Sensation

As people age, the natural sense of thirst becomes less sensitive. Many seniors don't feel thirsty until dehydration has already begun.

2. Reduced Kidney Function

Aging kidneys are less efficient at conserving fluids. This means seniors are more likely to lose fluids through urine, even when the body needs to hold onto it.

3. Chronic Health Conditions

Common conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, or heart failure can affect fluid balance. Additionally, illnesses that cause fever, vomiting, or diarrhea significantly increase fluid loss.

4. Medication Side Effects

Conditions like dementia can cause a person to forget to drink water, while arthritis or limited mobility can make it difficult to access fluids independently.

6. Fear of Incontinence

Some older adults intentionally limit their fluid intake to avoid frequent trips to the bathroom, particularly at night. This is especially common among residents with bladder control concerns.

Signs and Symptoms of Dehydration in Seniors

Dehydration can develop slowly, and its signs may be subtle—especially in older adults. Caregivers and staff should be trained to identify early warning signs to avoid complications.

Common Symptoms Include:

Dry mouth, lips, or tongue
Decreased urination or dark-colored urine
Fatigue or general weakness
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Headaches
Muscle cramps
Constipation
Confusion or sudden changes in mental status
Sunken eyes or dry skin
Low blood pressure or increased heart rate

Severe dehydration can lead to serious complications such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney failure, heat injuries, and hospitalization.

How Much Fluid Do Seniors Need?

Hydration needs vary from person to person, but general recommendations suggest that older adults aim for about:

Women: 9 cups (2.2 liters) per day
Men: 13 cups (3.0 liters) per day

However, fluid needs may change based on activity levels, medical conditions, medications, and climate. Some residents may require more, while others (such as those with heart or kidney conditions) may require medically supervised fluid restrictions.

How We Help Prevent Dehydration at Heathwood Assisted Living

Preventing dehydration in assisted living requires a comprehensive and proactive approach that includes environmental strategies, staff training, resident engagement, and personalized care.

Welcome to the New Heathwood Assisted Living Website!

Welcome to the new Heathwood Assisted Living website. We are happy to bring the improved site with many enhancements – including this monthly blog! Keep up to date with everything happening with the Heathwood family. For residents and family members, you can now easily access our monthly activities and newsletters. We also will be adding new photo galleries for Penfield and Williamsville, check back frequently to see the fun we are having!

Additionally, we’re very excited to announce that construction has begun on the new addition of Heathwood Assisted Living at Williamsville. Final completion is expected in the spring of 2019! During the transition, we’ll continue to keep our residents and their families as unaffected as possible and we truly appreciate your patience. Starting June 11th, staff and visitor parking will be located in the Key Bank parking lot next door. You will see a walkway and signage directing you to the new front door. We’ll do everything we can to keep everything running as smoothly as possible!
